ONE & HONE

The Cider & Perry Orchards Network of Excellence, or ONE for short, is a network of growers leading the way in best practice and responsible husbandry.

ONE is now managed by the National Association of Cider Makers (NACM) who took it over in January 2014.  However, it was built upon the foundations of a previous project, established by the Foundation called HONE (Herefordshire Orchards Network of Excellence).

HONE was part funded by the European Union (EAFRD) and Defra through the VITAL Herefordshire LEADER programme.  It sought new opportunities for carbon reduction, cost-savings and income generation, as well as alternatives to current practices with an uncertain future, owing to tightening regulations and unstable oil prices.

Participating growers were given the opportunity to trial fresh ideas and techniques in cider apple growing and were encouraged to share best practice with other network members.

HONE supported:

  • information and research
  • skills training and talks
  • demonstrations and farm walks
  • videos and other online knowledge-sharing
  • demonstration field trials
  • publicity and promotion
  • buying group and machinery share
  • provision of a specialist directory for cider and perry fruit services
  • guidance from a talented Steering Committee
  • representation on the National Association of Cider Makers (NACM) Pomology Committee

Helping to secure a long term future for Cider and Perry fruit orchards will also help secure the long term future of our Herefordshire cider makers, associated employment and the unique heritage landscape which they represent.
